Hidden Treasures @ Chinatown Temporary Market and Food Centre

We acted on a tip off from a friend regarding good food in this temporary food centre near Outram Park MRT. He say there was cheap and good food there, and indeed it was. Our target for today was Grand Stewed Herbal Soup, from which we ordered a BBQ stingray, a imperial herbal chicken soup, water cress soup, stir fried vegetables and shishamo, all for under $30! Simply a great bargain! You might have to bear with the smoky place though, but for the sake of good food, it worth it.

Whilst waiting for the food to come, we tried out the chee cheong fun and the porridge at a stall near our seat, and it was a great find too. The price was good and the porridge was very smooth. Mind your tongue though.. its hot!

Dinner @ Zi Yean Restaurant

We were celebrating my partner's father's birthday, and once again, we patronised this Chinese restaurant that we often go: Zi Yean Restaurant. Taking a stroll up the gentle slope from Red Hill MRT, you will find the restuarant tucked away in the corner of a old HDB flat, brightly lit by a yellow signboard just on top of it. With its retro theme, complete with old style furniture, it serves great dishes, like the chicken with preserved vegetables and home made tofu. And on the day we were there, the shark fin soup was on offer, and each of us get to taste the great tasting soup, boiled with mushroom and chicken. Its light and refreshing, you should try it!

AustWine @ Farm Mart

Had a different kind of dining experience today. Tucked in a small corner of Farm Mart in Sungei Tengah, was an al fresco dining place called Aust Wine, which actually stands for Australia Wine. The menu was very simple here, but you must try the Pork Knuckle, which would cost you $28 but it was more than enough for 3 persons, just nice for 4. The kunckle was roasted just right, with tender meat and cripsy skin, without a whiff of the smell that sometimes came with pork. Be prepared to wait up to 20 mins for the dish, meanwhile, you can look out of the window or over the fence and watch people prawning.

On the way out of the restaurant, we saw this chili beer on a keg in the glass cellar of the place. Wonder how it tastes like? If you have tried it, please do tell us :)

Vinco Doughnuts @ Vivo City

vinco doughnuts

Saw a TV interview of the 2 young bosses and was quite impress. Only 23, they have set up a small kiosk in a relatively prime area. Oh well, doughnut craze in Singapore... hope to try the one at raffles city soon.

The queue was relatively short when we went there, and we thought 'why not'. So we queued for about 15 mins to get a dozen doughnuts. They weren't that fantastic, and although I haven't tried Krispy Kreme, I thought the 'Mr. Doughnut' I tried in Thailand was much better than this. IMO, even the sugar ones from stores like four leaves were nicer. Maybe because of the crowd, I felt the doughnuts were not fluffy nor looked nice enough. However, not to say that they were horrible, my favourites were the shi-sha-mo(sesame & chocolate) and sweet cheese.

Our verdict? I will get it if there's no/ short queue and when I have the craving for flavoured doughnut.
